REAL administers 8 schemes in the renewable energy and circular economy space: 3 consumer protection schemes, 4 certification schemes and a registration scheme. They all contribute to the UK’s path to achieving Net Zero.
RECC was developed in 2006 to ensure that consumers who invest in renewable energy systems, such as solar panels and heat pumps, are protected. By being part of RECC, businesses demonstrate that they meet its strict standards of customer service, installation quality, and post-installation support. As the largest code of its kind, RECC is key to promoting confidence in the renewable energy sector offering consumers reassurance that the businesses they work with are trustworthy. RECC is approved by the Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI) under their prestigious Approved Codes Scheme.
EVCC sets out high standards for businesses who are offering to sell and/or install EV chargepoints at private domestic premises. As well as requiring compliance with all relevant legal provisions, EVCC aligns with the Institute of Engineering and Technology’s Code of Practice for Electric Vehicle Charging Equipment Installation and Building Regulations. By being a member of EVCC, businesses demonstrate that they will design and install a chargepoint that works to the consumer and their property, ensuring that consumers can confidently make the transition to EV ownership.
The Home Renewables ADR Scheme is a certified ADR provider that assists with resolving disputes between consumers and businesses in the renewable energy and EV charging sectors. The service is independent and impartial, and gives consumers access to expert mediation and adjudication, to help resolve disputes without the need to take legal action.
The Biofertiliser Certification Scheme (BCS) provides assurance to consumers, farmers, food producers, and retailers that digestate materials produced from anaerobic digestion processes is safe for human, animal and plant health. BCS is the only independent scheme in the UK aligned and providing a framework for independent certification of digestate materials to end of waste and quality assurance frameworks in Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
The GGCS issues, transfers and retires Renewable Gas Guarantees of Origin (RGGOs) within a secure digital registry. The GGCS ensures that only one RGGO is issued for each unit of green gas that is produced, that they are transferred securely, and only ever allocated to one consumer. By doing so we provide certainty that green gases are not double counted.
The CCS provides assurance to consumers, farmers, food producers, and retailers that quality compost produced from composting processes is safe for human, animal and plant health. CCS is the only independent scheme in the UK aligned and providing a framework for independent certification of compost to end of waste and quality assurance frameworks in Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The CMCS is a certification scheme for compostable materials placed on the UK market. For producers, CMCS provides services for the assessment and labelling of compostable finished/end products. For consumers, CMCS provides assurance and confidence in the biodegradability of certified products. A platform to check the status of certified products and identify appropriate treatment options is available on the CMCS website.
Interoperable roaming ensures that electric vehicle drivers can find charging stations throughout the UK and Europe and that they can make the right payments without any hassle. To help make interoperability a reality, and developed in partnership with the REA’s EV Forum, REAL runs the UK's EV ID Registration Organisation, issuing Chargepoint Operators and e-Mobility Service Providers with unique IDs for their charging stations and contracts. The live ID register, as well as a REST API to query the ID register, is available on the EV Roam website.
